The Young Home

2008 GRAND Aurora Award Winner

&

2009 APEX Winner for Energy Efficiency!

For 12 months, this 6640 square foot home buys about 73 KWH per day (2209 KWH per month) with approximately 35 KWH of it being for home comfort (heat/air) and hot water. How much is that in dollars? At $0.11 a KWH, the average monthly utility bill is $243 a month. And that includes their heated pool and lawn pumps! According to a 2005 study by AEC, a 1500 sq ft all electric home (without pool and lawn pumps) averaged 1910 KWH. This is about 4.5 times larger than that with only 16% higher power bill! Turn off the pool pump and lawn pumps and it would drop below the average 1500 sq ft home! What drives all of this? Super tight construction utilizing WaterFurnace Geothermal heating/cooling, Spray Foam Insulation, and solar power.

Air Conditioning & Heating:

The concept was building a home around the latest and greatest in energy conservation. In 2007, Dept. of Energy states that 55% of our bill goes for heating, cooling, and hot water. According to the EPA, geothermal systems are the most energy efficient, environmentally clean, and cost-effective space conditioning systems available (source: "Space Conditioning: The Next Frontier," EPA 430-R-93-004, April 1993).

To get the lowest possible power bills at the highest level of indoor comfort , we selected the home comfort system to use three WaterFurnace NDV Series systems using a four ton for the main living, two ton for the master suite, and two ton for the guest area. These systems all use two stage compressors and twelve speed, variable blowers, touch screen programmable thermostats, and latest environmentally friendly 410 refrigerant. As with most geothermal systems, no outside unit is necessary.

Because of the two stage compressor, the four ton, the EER is 22.7-29.6 depending on what stage the compressor is running. The two ton units has an EER of 26-34.5. An equivalent SEER would range from about 31 to 46.

Insulation:
Applied as a liquid, spray foam expands to 100 times its volume to fill every crack and crevice while remaining flexible so that the integrity of the building envelope seal remains intact over time. It acts as a complete insulation and air barrier to minimize air leakage and seal the building envelope for optimal airtightness. According to the Minneapolis Blower Door testing, the estimated cost of air leakage for heating/cooling in this home is about $10 a month.

Solar Panels
Solar panels were also installed to deliver roughly 30KW per day with this home needing roughly 102KW a day. Bulk of the domestic water heating is done with solar panels with hot water assist off the geothermal heating/cooling system. The solar panels also provide 100% of the water needed to heat the swimming pool. Additional solar power that is generated is sold back to the utility company.

End Result:
A very efficient home that gained roughly 1600 square foot of usable semi conditioned attic space, all the hot water you’ll ever need, extremely comfortable and even temperature rooms, and at a power bill any homestead could afford. The home is super quiet and extremely energy efficient, based on the savings in power bill versus increased mortgage, the higher standard of efficiency actually saves money every month!
