Breakdown of BTUH load

This is a typical home for northwest Florida that is 2416 square feet with 8 foot ceilings and slab on grade construction.

The total heat load (air conditioner demand) was 23,089 BTUH's.  Here is a breakdown of that heat load:

Walls based on 2x4 construction with fiberglass bat insulation.

Doors are metal with urethane cores.

Glass is double pane with thermal breaks.

Ceiling is R-38.

Floor is concrete slab on grade.

Infiltration is industry standard for fiberglass bats.

Duct loss is at 5% leakage.

Occupant load was based on 5 people living in the home.

Appliance load is industry standard.

The latent load was 23.52% of the load.

Changing the insulation to blown cellulous will reduce the load by 3722 BTUH's.  Extending the overhangs to shade the windows would further reduce the load by 1749 BTUH's.  In this particular case, these two small changes would reduce the load by 5471 BTUH's or 76.3% of the original load.  Therefore, the air conditioner could be reduced by a half ton with no fears of under sizing.  Smaller air conditioner means lower initial cost and lower monthly utility bills.
